FUENTES
Robert D. Fuentes, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on December 27, 2012 at the age of 89. He was born on November 21, 1923 in Seguin, Texas. He joined the United States Army at the age of 17 and served honorably in World War II, landing at Normandy Beach on D-Day, continuing through Europe as part of the 1120 Engineer Combat Group, and participating in the liberation of Berlin before returning home in 1945. That year, he married the love of his life, Bessie Gutierrez, also from Seguin, Texas, and they started their life together in San Antonio, Texas where he began work at Kelly Air Force Base. He retired after more than 30 years with the Civil Service. He and his wife devoted their lives to raising their daughter, Esperanza, and son, Larry. His children's academic and lifetime successes were among his greatest sources of joy. In every endeavor, he was their biggest supporter and continues to be a strong presence in their lives. Lovingly referred to as D.D. by friends and family, he cherished time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a source of unwavering love, support, and great humor to everyone who had the good fortune to know him. Among his many hobbies, he especially enjoyed fishing trips to Woodlawn and Calaveras lakes and the Texas Gulf coast. His annual pecan harvest and backyard vegetable garden provided hours of entertainment to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As the center of his family, D.D. served as the model of a good husband, father, and friend. He will be forever missed and will continue to inspire his family in their individual and collective endeavors. He is reunited in death with Bessie Fuentes, his wife of 65 years, his mother Maria Fuentes, and his three brothers Frank, Joe, and Tom Fuentes. He is survived by his daughter Esperanza Lopez, son Larry Fuentes (Arlene); his grandchildren Bryan Lopez (Laura), Branden Lopez (Rochelle), Amanda Fuentes, Eric Fuentes, Gregory Fuentes; and his adoring great-grandchildren Diego, Joaquin, Sofia, and Isabella. Public Visitation and a recitation of the Rosary will be held at The Angelus Funeral Home on Thursday, January 3 at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 4 at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial to follow at San Fernando Cemetery II. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church at 152 Florencia, San Antonio, TX 78228. Condolences may be sent to the Fuentes family at www.theangelusfuneralhome.com.
