SHAFFAR
CMSGT Samuel Paul Shaffar Born in Kennett, Missouri on February 25, 1921, a United States Air Force pioneer left this world July 18, 2014, at the age of 93, to spend eternity with our Lord Jesus and His Father. Chief Shaffar was a deeply dedicated patriot that started his military career in the US Army, then The Army Air Corp and then, when the US Air Force was born was a proud member of that cadre - a true "brown shoe" enlisted man. He served his country for 28 years: during WWII, Korea and Viet Nam - serving in country during WWII and Viet Nam. He was promoted to MSgt (E7) with 3 years 4 months of service and remained that rank for 16 years. Then they created the ranks of Senior Master Sergeant and Chief Master Sergeant. He was promoted to Senior on the very first promotion cycle and to Chief on the Second "Chief" cycle - becoming one of the very first, elite top 1 percent of enlisted men ever to wear that rank . His last 5 assignments were as Base Sergeant Major, later retitled Senior Enlisted Advisor then again retitled as Command Chief. His final assignment was as Command Sergeant Major for Strategic Air Command (SAC). During WWII he earned a WWII Campaign medal with a Battle Star. When the war was over he served on General of the Army, Omar Bradley's Staff and in Paris with SHAPE HQ handling post war negotiations. In Viet Nam he served at Tan Son Nhut and Bien Hoa Air Force Bases- where he earned a bronze star. Dad was an American Military man through and through - but also a Great and loving, caring father, husband and grandpa. The love of his life, our Mom, Arlene Fay Shaffar preceded him home. He is also survived by Son A1c Dan Shaffar, Daughter Sandra Shaffar and Son MSgt Bob Shaffar, Granddaughters, Susan Redding and Christina Ogier and Grandson SSgt Steven Shaffar and 4 great grandchildren. He will be missed, but we will all see him and Mom again. There will be a viewing on Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 3 pm to 6 pm at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville, Texas. Graveside Services will be July 28, 2014 at 10:30 am officiated by CMSGT Rod Ellison with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
