Streling Neuman Obituary
Sterling Samuel Neuman, age 73, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. Sterling was a man of all seasons - a businessman, Community leader, volunteer, father, husband, artist and musician. He was comfortable in almost all situations as he loved life, people, and exhibited a deep commitment to making life better for others. He believed strongly in making a difference in the world, and he did everything he could to accomplish that goal. Sterling felt that what you take from a community you must give back. He was a giver and mentor to many and strived to make good things happen. His passion was working with people and watching them meet their potential. Sterling brought out the best in everyone using his knack for managing problems and finding solutions. People were drawn to him and asked his advice and guidance. He was a strong leader but lead with a gentle and compassionate heart. Sterling is survived by his wife, Rachelle Neuman; daughters: Wendy Alyse Rosenthal and Pam Beth Neuman; son-in-law, Lowell Rosenthal; grandchildren: Allison Leigh Rosenthal, Adam Harris Rosenthal, Michael Aaron Nieto, Rachel Rose Neuman and Shelsta Larsen; sister, Cookie Gerson; brother-in-law, Jack Gerson; and many nieces and nephews. Sterling was born at Nix hospital in San Antonio, TX on April 30, 1940. His parents were Lee and Artie Neuman who moved to San Antonio from Chicago. He attended San Antonio Academy and TMI military schools and in 1960 graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a BBA in Accounting. In 1961, he married Rachelle Applebaum from Marshall, Texas and they moved to Augusta, Georgia. There he served in the Military Police Corps as a company Commander over six hundred men. In 1963, he joined his father in business, Neuman Distributing Company, a specialty food company that sold perishable and non-perishable foods to grocery stores and food service establishments. Sterling's community involvement included the following; President of the San Antonio Food Bank, President of National Food Distributions Association, Chairman of Bexar Senior Advisory Committee AAGOG, Board member of Master Leadership Program Alumni, board Member of Bexar Senior Advisory Committee, Member of Joint Commission on Elderly Affairs, Board member of City Year, Chairman of Alamo Service Connection Steering Committee, Board Member of Accion Texas/Louisiana Microlender, Counselor - Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), President of the Jewish Community Center, President of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio and President of Temple Chai Reform Jewish Temple. Sterling was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend and will be missed by all.
