SISTER VIRGINIA CLARE DUNCAN, CDP
Sister Virginia Clare Duncan, age 95, entered eternal life on September 7, 2013, after following her dream for 80 years of being a Sister of Divine Providence. Born in Palestine, Texas on August 19, 1918, she became a Sister at the age of 22. Primarily an educator, Sister Virginia Clare moved through Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, teaching at every level from Pre-K through graduate school, and served as principal in elementary and secondary schools. In San Antonio, she ministered at St. Mary's Parochial School, St. Martin Hall, and Our Lady of the Lake University. Earning a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin, she served at OLLU as Assistant Dean in the Education Department and later taught at Northwestern University, Natchitoches, Louisiana. She served in the Texas Teacher Center Project at UT, El Paso, and as its Director at the Region XX Educational Service Center. Sister Virginia Clare became the Congregation's first Development Director in the 80s. Loving to travel, she also sponsored 9 Providence Tours for Sisters and friends through sites in the United States, Canada, and Europe. In 1997 she returned to OLL Convent where she was involved in community service and later retired. She is survived by her brother, Floyd Duncan and his wife, Pat, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marietta Johnson Duncan, her sisters, Gladys Duncan, Katherine Duncan, Bertha Shockley, and Lucille Arnold. The Rosary will be recited Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. and the Wake will be at 6:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. All services will be in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center.
