Virginia Jones Obituary
Virginia Watson Jones died January 7, 2013. She was born and raised in San Antonio and graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans and the University of Texas at San Antonio, earning her B.A. and B.F.A. degrees. She pursued her graduate education at Texas Women's University, attaining her M.A. and M.F.A. degrees, culminating in the 1986 publication of her book, Contemporary American Women Sculptors. She was an art instructor at TMI in San Antonio before relocating to New Mexico with her husband, Lionel Lippmann, an archaeologist and photographer, to open their gallery, Art and Artifact. She taught art in New Mexico public schools and was an accomplished ceramics sculptor, passionately devoted to the arts in her community of Capitan. She dedicated herself to the Capitan Music Festival, the Territorial Theater, and the Lincoln County Arts Council. She published Lincoln County Arts in 1999. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mark and Elizabeth Watson, her sister Hallie, and her husband Lionel. She is survived by her brother, Mark E. Watson, Jr. of San Antonio, her sister, Jane Watson Glenn of New Kensington, PA, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Chapel, 111 Barilla, on Monday, January 21 at 1:00 p.m. Following the Mass, a reception will be held at the Argyle, 734 Patterson, from 2:15 until 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Cancer Treatment & Research Center, Office of Development MC8038, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, TX 78229, or to the Capitan Public Library, 101 E. 2nd Street, PO Box 1169, Capitan, NM 88316, or donated online at capitanlibrary.org.
