RODRIGUEZ
Virginia L. "Ginny" Rodriguez, USAF, Major (Ret), 76, died suddenly in her home on Tuesday, August 28, 2012. Born in Chicago, she enlisted in the Air Force in 1958 in Honolulu. After serving four years, she was selected for advanced schooling and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant following graduation from Arizona State University and Officer Training School. She was one of the first women microbiologists in the Air Force, and served more than 26 years, retiring as a Major in 1984. During her career as a Biomedical Laboratory Officer, she helped modernize labs at Kelly AFB, the School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks AFB, and Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio as well as at Travis AFB, CA. and Barksdale AFB, LA. She served overseas at Clark AFB, Philippines where she helped develop more sensitive screening tests for sexually transmitted diseases, which resulted in more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatments. Ginny read voraciously and loved and protected animals. She enjoyed classical music and loyally supported the San Antonio Symphony. She is survived by her long-time friend, Jana Cragg; Jana's son Andrew Diggdon, wife Sabrina and children Aaron and Alyssa of Oakland, CA; and son Adam Diggdon of San Francisco, CA; and by Alice Cragg, who loved Ginny as a daughter.
