Walter F. Brown passed away July 18, 2014. He was 84 years old. He was born May 6, 1930, in Breckenridge, Texas to Walter Travis and Estelle Lattner Brown. Mr. Brown graduated from the University of Texas and became an independent oil and gas producer and investor. During his career he founded Delray Oil Inc. and W. F. Brown Exploration Ltd. of Canada. He is survived by Lenora, his wife of 59 years; a daughter, Janet L. Brown; son, Walter F. Brown Jr. and wife Katherine; three grandchildren, Rachel, Rebecca and "Tres"; and a brother, Dr. Forrest C. Brown of Dallas. During his career he served on the boards of Central Louisiana Electric Company, Louisiana Intrastate Gas Corporation, Louisiana Production Company and Celeron Corporation. Mr. Brown was a former board chairman of Trinity University and was the recipient of Trinity's Distinguished Service Award. Both Trinity University's Distinguished Lecture Series and the Distinguished Scientists Series were endowed by the Browns. He was also a life trustee of the San Antonio Museum of Art and a trustee emeritus of both Texas Biomedical Research and the McNay Art Museum. The Browns began donating their collection of Asian works to the San Antonio Museum of Art in the 1980s. In 2005, the museum board honored the couple for their on-going commitment by naming the new expansion to the museum the Lenora and Walter F. Brown Asian Wing. Brown was a member of the Argyle and San Antonio Country clubs and a founding member of both Club Giraud and the San Antonio Petroleum Club. A private interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park with The Rev. Raymond Judd officiating. A reception honoring his life will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, August 14, 2014 at The Argyle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the San Antonio Museum of Art or Trinity University.
