LT COL William L. Thomas, U.S. Air Force (ret.), age 93, passed away September 1, 2013. He was born on April 6, 1920 in Washington, DC. He was a loving husband; father, grandfather and friend who will be dearly missed. He joined the National Guard at the age 17, and then joined the regular Army after Pearl Harbor. In October 1944, his plane was shot down over Cologne, Germany and he became a prisoner of war. He served in Vietnam as well. He retired from the Air Force in 1972.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Marie Arneson; father, William L. Thomas; brother, Robert Leroy "Mike" Thomas; 1st wife, Doris Adelene Lindsay; and son, Stephen William Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Chatkoaw Thomas; 4 children, Tera Thomas, William L. Thomas, Laura A. Thomas and Thanet Thomas; and 1 granddaughter, Connie Frazier.
Visitation will be 5-9 p.m., Friday, September 6, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be 9:30 a.m., Friday, September 13, 2013 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Condolences may be offered at www.sunsetfuneralhomesa.com .
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the San Antonio Humane Society or Hummingbird Farm.
