Willis (Bill) Lee Akin Jr. was called home on February 25, 2014; he was born on November 5, 1938 in McAllen, TX, to Willis L. Akin and Peggy Simpson. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Geraldine T. Akin, 4 children: Willis L. Akin, III & wife Jessica, Michael L. Akin & wife Denise, David E. Akin & wife Heather, and Diana L. Akin; and 3 granddaughters Haley, Ashley and Hannah.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX and a degree in banking/trust from Southern Methodist University. He served in the Air Force for 5 years during the Vietnam era and 20 years in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Major. Bill was in banking for 15 years prior to joining civil service at Kelly AFB & Brooks AFB and subsequently retiring from Brooks AFB in 2009 after 29 years of civil service with the Air Force. He was active in many community organizations throughout his life: Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Rotary, Red Cross, & Easter Seals Society. He loved all sports, but was especially fond of football, tennis & soccer. His passion for soccer crossed over to coaching youth soccer teams wherever his family lived; this passion and love for his family, sports, and the armed forces will be missed, but never forgotten.
Services will begin at 10:00 am with a rosary, followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:15 am on March 17th at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3909 Harry Wurzbach Rd. Interment will be at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent dePaul Society at St. Pius X Church or to the .
