Douglas G. "Doug" Engberg passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, in San Luis Obispo after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Doug was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1931 to Judd and Lucille Engberg. Doug's family, which then included his younger sister Suzanne "Sue," moved from Minnesota to California in 1945 and settled in Los Angeles where Doug attended junior and senior high school. Doug met the love of his life, Bonnie Ferbrache, in 1950 while both were attending college. They married in 1953 and would have celebrated their 61st anniversary this July 11, 2014. Doug and Bonnie welcomed three children into their lives: Darcy in 1956, Eric in 1957, and Kristin in 1960. They also considered their Swedish exchange student, Monika Vinterek, a member of the family and their "third daughter." Doug graduated from UCLA in 1954 with a degree in zoology. He served honorably in the U.S. Army, both on active duty and as a reservist. From 1957-1962 Doug worked for Mobil Oil Company as a Liquefied Petroleum Gas Coordinator. He then worked for Beckman Instruments, Inc. from 1963-1988, starting as a clinical scientist and rising to applications specialist and product line manager. He retired as a Marketing Manager from the clinical instruments division in 1988. Doug began his "second career" as a Realtor in 1993 and was associated with Cornerstone Real Estate in San Luis Obispo until he retired again in 2005. Doug was very active in his community and church. He was initiated into the Masons in 1996 at King David's Lodge in San Luis Obispo, where he was privileged to serve in various positions of leadership, becoming the Scottish Rite Knight Commander Court of Honor Award in 2005. In 2007 he was honored to receive the Hiram Award. Doug was also a devoted, some would say die hard, UCLA Bruins' fan. He followed their sports teams religiously and often sported Bruin's blue and gold. Doug is survived by his wife Bonnie; three children: daughter Darcy and husband Arnie Honick of Iowa City, Iowa; son Eric and wife Teri of Dana Point, Calif.; and daughter Kristin and husband Jeff Routsong of Murrieta, Calif. He also leaves behind his grandsons Brendon and Sean Honick, Jesse and Jeffrey Routsong; and granddaughters Jonelle and Delaina Engberg. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m., Saturday, July 12, 2014, at King David's Lodge in San Luis Obispo. The family requests in lieu of flowers that any donations be made to the Scholarship Fund at King David's Masonic Lodge 209, 859 Marsh St., San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.
