Genevieve, also known as Genny, was born to Blanche and Bill O'Keefe in Casper, Wyo., in July 1921, and passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, with her husband, Albert, and family by her side. She was 92 years "young." Genny spent her early years living in Texas and Florida. The family then settled in Scotts Bluff, Neb., where her father found work with the gas company. After graduation from the University of Miami, she taught high school English and Drama in Bayard, Neb., then moved to California where she met the love of her life, Albert, while attending classes at the USC. Genevieve and Al raised three children, LeAnn, Bill and Mary. She became a high school counselor at Baldwin Park School, where she stayed for 43 years. Many students fondly remember her, especially the Classes of 1955, 1959 and 1963, which just held their 50th year reunions. After she retired, Genny was deeply involved in her community and used her talents as a docent with the Pasadena Courthouse and was an ambassador at the Arcadia Senior Center. She was always excited about going ballroom dancing with Albert. She had a "shop till you drop" mindset and could smell a good deal a mile away. Genny and Al moved to The Villages in San Luis Obispo a year ago, and in that short time, made many friends. Genny was always the life of the party. She had a passion for life that was freely shared with those that knew her. "Life - It's a gift, not a given." She wanted all of her family and friends to take life for just that - "a gift," each and every day. Live it to the fullest - share a story, laugh out loud, dance, have a hot toddy, give someone a hug ... and then give more hugs. May we all celebrate life as she did! Genny is survived by her husband of almost 67 years, Al; three children LeAnn Conway (Cliff), Dr. William Green (Diane) and Mary Collins; and eight grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Grammy." She will be greatly missed. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church, 221 Daly in San Luis Obispo. Those who love deeply never grow old.
