Harald Platou, 91, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1922 and died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, in Los Osos. He grew up in Philadelphia, Pa., and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a proud graduate of the University of Oregon "GO DUCKS!" Harald taught high school science in western Oregon for 15 years before he moved to San Luis Obispo in 1965. He was part of the original staff of Cuesta College, where he taught Biological sciences until he retired in 1989. Harald is survived by his wife of 38 years, Fely; son, Fred; daughter, Ellen Abbasi; four grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Carl Platou. A vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2050 Palisades in Los Osos. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, also at St. Elizabeth Ann. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, St. Timothy's Church in Morro Bay, or the Fely and Harald Platou Scholarship Fund at Cuesta College.
