John Wetherill Budlong, 85, of Morro Bay died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, in his home of heart failure. Mr. Budlong was a tenth generation descendant of a pioneer Rhode Island family dating back to 1641. He was born in September 1928 in Chicago, Ill. When he was 2, John and his family moved to Santa Monica, Calif., where John grew up. He graduated from Santa Monica High School and received his degree from Santa Monica City College. He went to work for General Telephone, where he held various engineering jobs and retired after 35 years. John was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. John was very active with memberships in the Morro Bay Yacht Club, NRA, SLO Sportsmen's Association, SAMOHI Alumni Association, Mended Hearts, Morro Bay Senior Citizens, CA Rifle and Pistol Association, and Telephone Pioneer Association. John is survived by his loving wife of almost 40 years, Frances; daughters Blythe Bacharowski of Flat Rock, N.C. and Alyson Lindsay of Camarillo, Calif.; grandchildren Jillian Ponek, Connor Lindsay and Corie Lindsay; and brother Albert Budlong. We will miss seeing John along with his wife. They were a common and memorable sight in Morro Bay, wearing their identical bright jackets with matching baseball caps. Services will be private.
