Ruth Eleanor Wassel, 79, passed peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at French Hospital in San Luis Obispo, surrounded by her husband, Gus, and their three children. Ruth was born in 1934 to Walter and Mildred Albers of Crete, Illinois. While attending the University of Illinois, she met Gus Wassel. In 1955 they married and, following his military service, settled in California. Ruth was busy during the 20 years they lived in Glendora, Calif. raising their three children, playing tennis, sewing, reading and spending as much time as possible at the beach. Ruth and Gus moved to San Luis Obispo in 1980 and then to Baywood Park in 1987. Ruth enjoyed living on the coast, knitting and playing bridge. She had a lifelong love of books, music and theatre. Ruth and Gus also enjoyed international travel throughout their marriage, beginning with a two year stay in Tanzania in the 1960s. Ruth is survived by her husband, Gus Wassel; children Annette Mickelson of Placerville, Marie LaForge of Saratoga and Ted Wassel of San Diego; grandchildren Nicholas LaForge, Justin LaForge, Kristin LaForge, Kyle Corio, Camille Corio and Taylor Wassel. A private celebration of Ruth's life will be held in March.
