Vernon Jackson, 92, was born in Madison, S.D., and died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014. He was a World War II veteran with the 109th Combat Engineers, 34th Infantry Div., where he served in North Africa and Italy. Vernon graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1956, he and his wife, Frances and children moved to Sacramento, Calif., to work for Aerojet, where they were developing the Titan Missile. He retired from McClellan Air Force Base as an Aircraft Structural Engineer. Vernon is survived by his wife, Lorraine, whom he married in 2008; son, Alan (Cindy); daughter, Elizabeth (John); and grandchildren Julie, Leah and Ezra. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 959 Valley Road in Arroyo Grande. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is open at St. John's.
