Friend, mentor of how to be older, somewhat wiser and unusually unstuck! He drove his old Volvo as if it was a P-51 and threaded the traffic with agile enthusiasm. I rode all the way white-knuckled and seat-belted as if my life depended on it!
My web site consultancy was growing a bit like his tillandsia air plants. Little at a time, thank you and only the most unusual may apply.
Well, Charles (never call him Charlie!) was one of a kind. He let me help him, and accepted the starter design for his "web" and he was off to the races, building more and more pages, buying more and more hard drives to contain all the extra back up copies of the precious photos of air plants he loved so much. I never really did the math at any time to figure out how old he was.
He was never "old" to me as I saw him. When we first met, I was in my 60's and he was so intent and engaged in his web site, collecting the plants and showing off the small guest area in his back yard.
Plus, his sweet wife, Sauny, still working at Cal Poly and in her spare time creating the most beautiful hand woven necklace creations. Some were used in movies!
Yes, he was "spunky" and very kind to this young kid. I'm sure his spirit is doing something right now that's interesting and lots of fun.
So long, friend. I realize now, you were the grand dad I never knew until I met you. See you sometime on the other side.

Class 43-E - Dr. Dills Front Row, Fourth from Left

This is sad news that has only lately reached us in Alabama. Dr. Dills' name is known to local historians in Courtland, AL, a town adjacent to where he attended Basic Flight school during early 1943. He was a member of the very first cadet class to graduate from Courland - Class 43-E. We have an exhibit/memorial dedicated to him in the town history museum. Unfortunately, I only knew him briefly by virtue of help he provided through his excellent memories of Courtland Army Air Field and his experiences there. What a sharp mind! This was most helpful to us as we prepared historical markers for the site. His strong character was instantly recognizable, and left a lasting impression on me. Dr. Dills, thank you for your service.

Charles was an amazing person and was not only a mentor of mine but became a special friend. Without his help, guidance and inspiration, I would have not every finished my chem class, senior project and graduate from Cal Poly. Every time I think of him, or our conversations, a huge smile always appears on my face and in my heart.

I'm very sorry to hear that Chas, as he called himself, passed away. I knew him from the Bromeliad hobby since 1993 and had a lot of correspondence with him about names etc. He was a remarkable man. Charles, rest in peace.

Mr. Dills was always a charm to talk with when he would visit my desk when I worked at the credit union.I knew right then he was a man of exceptional intelligence, charm and humor. He lived a full and complete life and is an example of humanity for us all.

I had Dr. Dills as a teacher at Poly in the last 80's. I loved his teaching style and general zany attitude. He took me flying once with another chemistry major. We paid for the gas and he took us flying up the coast and behind Hearst Castle. What a great man. I will always remember him fondly.

I had Dr. Dills for a couple O-Chem classes back in the late 1980s. To this day I still think of him wearing his "Vote" jump suit on every election day. I'm sad to hear of his passing but he sure packed a lot into a long, productive life--an example for all. Rest in peace.

I knew Mr Dills during my many years working at SESLOC. And although I have been away from there for 17 years, some customers remain solid in my mind. Mr Dills was one of the few who I held in the greatest esteem. And one of the very few whom I would write in this guest book. He was personable and professional at all times and I am pleased to have known him.---Rhonda V

Marit Dills was my student at Laguna Jr. High. At that early age, she demonstrated maturity, kindness and respect for others. I am sure that came from the parents who raised her! I know she will miss her Dad. My thoughts are with the Dills family. Mrs. K/Laguna Phys. Ed.

My father, how much you will be missed is impossible for me to express. You were such a wonderful father and role model and consider myself lucky to also call you my friend. You taught me an infinite number of things, even in the end -- that we can go in peace and love with strength, acceptance, and courage. Thankful to have known you and ever blessed to call you Dad. You will remain in my heart and soul forever.
