Al passed away on Sunday, April 28th in Modesto, CA at the age of 91. He was born and raised in Santa Cruz, CA where he resided for 70 years before moving to Oakdale, CA in 1992 to be near his immediate family. He lived in Oakdale up until his recent passing.
During World War II, Al entered the Army in 1942 and served in the Pacific theater as a Sergeant for the 3rd Signal Battalion. He was a participant in the April landings on Okinawa in 1945 which experienced some of the most deadly fighting of the war. He often mentioned the 'thousand' ships assembled off Okinawa in amazement. After Okinawa, he was assigned to Korea to prepare for the invasion of Japan which was later deemed unnecessary.
Al married Udena Pillsbury in Reno, NV on April 30th, 1953. They remained married until his passing and would have reached their 60th anniversary on Tuesday, April 30th. Al owned a business on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz in the 50's and also worked for the Greyhound Company. He finished his career as a maintenance technician for the Santa Cruz City Schools for 25 years until his retirement in 1982.
Throughout Al's life he was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed watching sporting events, especially the Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants. Vegetable gardening was a passion.
He is survived by his wife Udena Kensinger of Oakdale, CA, daughter Cheryl Westberg (Paul) of Oakdale, CA, son Albert Kensinger of Escalon, CA and grandchildren Mandy Westberg, John Westberg, and David Kensinger. He is also survived by sister Shirley Benge of Montana. Preceding in death are (3) sisters and (3) brothers along with his parents Florence and Elmer Kensinger.
Services will be held at 2pm Tues., May 7th at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery at 32053 West McCabe Road, Santa Nella, CA. Funeral arrangements have been arranged by Oakdale-Riverbank Mem- orial Chapels, 830 West F Street, Oakdale, CA 95361, (209) 847-2211.
There will be an after funeral reception to follow the proceedings.
