Carl Ordway Obituary
Carl Ordway
Formerly a resident of Santa Cruz
A gentle heart stopped beating, after 88 years as our beloved Carlton Francis Ordway returned to his Heavenly home. Carl was born in Lawrence, MA to Carlton and Marie Haynes. At a very early age, Carl lost his father to TB. His mother remarried and Carl was happily raised by Marie and Albert J. Ordway whom he always considered his father. He joined the National Guard before being drafted into the Army where he proudly served in World War ll while stationed in the Philippines and the Korean War. He was honored with many promotions and was highly decorated. While serving, Carl met and married Edna. He always joked that she "out ranked" him. After retiring from the military, he took a job with Social Services. He had the patience of a saint and dealt with the difficulties of the job with a special understanding. Carl thrived at all he was involved in. He was a life member and held numerous high office's with the Santa Cruz Shrine Club. He felt helping the less fortunate and children in need were of utmost importance. Carl also spent his hours enjoying music, dancing, golfing and bowling, just to name a few. After his final retirement he kept busy doing the things he loved. Years later after losing Edna, Carl took a cruse on a single's "Love Boat" where he met the love of his life, Jenness. They married August 1, 1984 and he always referred to her as "his bride". During their golden years they loved traveling, dancing and gardening. After he and Jenness moved to Santa Rosa, Carl volunteered for 10 yrs at St Joseph Memorial Hospital, East Wing, where appropriately he spent his final days. Carl never had children, however he was an inspiration to all and gave great "fatherly" advice. Those around him rarely walked away without a smile on their face. He was a true gentleman.
Carl is survived by step-daughter Jan Wurtz and husband Chuck, step-daughter Georgia Martin-Deutsch, step-son Bud Martin and wife Margaret Barkley, step-grandchildren, Anna, Eric, Chris and Michael, niece's, Carol Marsh, Barbara Madaus, Linda Horton, their families and many more, who adored him.
He is preceded in death and once again in the loving embraces of, his father's, Carlton F. Haynes Sr. and Albert J. Ordway, mother Marie Ordway, wife's, Edna Ordway and Jenness Ordway, brother, Albert C. Ordway (Butch) and wife Elizabeth (Betty) Ordway.
The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, visits and kind words during Carl's brief illness. Also, our heartfelt gratitude to the Franco family and the staff at Orchard Inn where Carl resided the last 6 yrs after losing Jenness, for their dedication and care. Together, along with residents, they made Carl feel loved and adored. We were blessed to have them in his life.
Until we meet again, our wonderful Carl will be deeply missed.
