Hazel was born in Greene Co., PA to Sarah Lyon and William Ferrell. As a young girl, Hazel excelled in athletics, and at age 20, joined the first round of WAVES (Navy) in WWII. First stationed in Banana River, FL, she then transferred to Hunter College in New York for training, and then onto Naval Radio Training School in Oxford, Ohio. Hazel married Chief Petty Officer John Z. Espe in 1944. She was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class (radioman). With her husband, she raised three children in San Jose, CA. Hazel moved to Aromas when she retired in 1990 after a long career with NASA Ames Research Center and Northrup. She always remained proud of her military service and long career in civil service. Hazel's greatest joys were spending time and sharing stories with her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed sitting on her sunny porch, gardening, and watching birds.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Earl, and twin sister, Helen. She leaves behind three children, Kathleen Bullock of San Jose, John W. Espe of Oregon, Barbara Espe of Aromas; six grandchildren, Shelley, Dylan, Brandon, Aaron, Alexandra, and Adam; three great-grandchildren, Travis, Christian, and Berlyn; and niece and nephew, Janis and Jeffrey.
