Idanthea Beyette Weston, founder of Old Orchard School in Campbell, passed away March 16, 2013, in Santa Cruz, CA, following a short illness. She was 82.
Known as Dannie to her friends and "Miss Dannie" to several generations of students, she and her twin sister, Bonnie, were born in Paris, France, where their father, a career U.S. Army Officer, was posted. As a girl, her family moved to military postings around the United States, from New York to Texas to San Diego.
In the spring of 1947, Dannie was a freshman at Scripps College in Claremont when friends organized a blind date with William B. Weston Jr., a freshman at Claremont Men's College. They dated throughout their college years and married the day after their graduations in 1951.
The couple made their home and raised their children in Santa Clara on Peraleda Ranch, where four generations of Westons grew pears. As a young mother, Dannie was an active member of the Junior League and supported the organization in later years as a sustaining member.
Dannie first became involved with education as a volunteer at a children's shelter. In 1964, she accepted a position as a pre-school teacher. She embraced the work and after nine years decided to open a private elementary school, with a program that offered challenging and engaging academics and rich offerings in the arts. Dannie opened Old Orchard School opened in 1973 with two grades. Today, it is a well-regarded institution with 10 grades (Jr.K-8), two campuses and nearly four generations of elementary school graduates.
In 1979, Dannie and Bill moved to the Santa Cruz Mountains, where they built a home in Soquel. In their retirement years, they enjoyed many journeys together, both abroad and in their Airstream motorhome, often traveling with friends. They were married for 61 years.
Dannie is survived by her husband, Bill; her son, Will, and daughter-in-law Liz; her daughter, Perrin Weston Coman, and son-in-law Chase; her daughter, Bonnie Weston; granddaughters Beyette, 10, and Emerson, 14; and a sister, Beverly Beyette Graber.
A private service was held March 21 in Palo Alto.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at Old Orchard School, located in the Congregational Church of Campbell, 400 West Campbell Ave, in Campbell, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the or .
