Resident of Watsonville
Joseph de Salazar, of Watsonville, passed away on July 16, 2013 at the age of 88.
Joe was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and moved to Southern California as a child. He graduated from San Fernando Valley High School in 1942. He received an economics degree from Occidental College. He served in World War II as a member of the Army Air Corp. He taught high school science, math and Spanish. He retired as a chemistry teacher from Aptos High School.
He is survived by his five sons, David, Stefan, Robert, Matthew, and Michael; and five grandchildren. His oldest son, Richard, passed away before him.
Joe was an active tennis player, coaching the Aptos High School tennis team for a period of time. He had an interest in astronomy. He also played golf regularly. He devoted much of his time volunteering for the First Tee of Monterey County, helping young players learn the game of golf.
Private services were held at the Veterans Administration San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at the Veterans Administration Medical Centers, Palo Alto, for their care.
