Feb. 21, 1912 - Feb. 27, 2014
Resident of Santa Cruz
Katherine Jean Busch passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2014 in Santa Cruz, California where she spent the last seven years of her life. She was 102 years old. Prior to her move to Santa Cruz, she had lived in Fresno, California for 60 years.
Katherine was born on February 21, 1912 in St. Paul, Minnesota and was raised in Minneapolis. She was the youngest daughter of Everett Worthing Osborne and Besse Drummond. She was a graduate of the Minnesota State Teachers College in St. Cloud, Minnesota and taught elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in the northern reaches of Minnesota during the 1930s. She remembered hard times with low wages and unimaginable cold winters.
She met her husband to be - Raymond Giles Busch from Woonsocket, South Dakota - in the late 1930s. World War II interrupted their relationship when he was drafted and sent to New Guinea where he served as a medic for four years. Katherine spent most of the war years working in Los Angeles. Katherine and Raymond were married when he returned to the States in 1944. Upon his returned he was stationed at Hammer Field in Fresno where their son, Patrick was born in 1945. They called Fresno home for the rest of Raymond's life.
Katherine remained in Fresno after her husband's death in 1967. She was an avid reader, a writer, a poet and an active member of the Fresno Writer's Club. She moved to Santa Cruz in 2005 to rehabilitate a broken hip and be closer to her family. During her time in Santa Cruz she resided at Sunshine Villa and the Kindred Healthcare Center.
Hers was a life shaped by the events of the twentieth century – her century as she referred to it. Her life spanned World War I, Prohibition, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, FDR, World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, nuclear weapons and fall out shelters, the Sixties, the Vietnam War, the Kennedys, Richard Nixon, Watergate, the Reagan years, Bill Clinton and the rise of China. She was a life long democrat who considered FDR the greatest person of her Century.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband Raymond and her sister Elizabeth Dalhaug of St. Peter, Minnesota. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Patrick Busch and Dale Summer-Busch of Santa Cruz, and her Grandson, Kevin Summer of San Francisco.
Katherine was a strong-willed and softhearted woman. Her good humor and fighting spirit will be missed.
