Charles R. Machovec Charles R. Machovec, called "Mac" by his friends, passed away at home peacefully in his sleep on January 20, 2013 at the age of 96. He was born on November 17, 1916 in Wahoo, Nebraska. A librarian, he held two master's degrees, one in psychology from the University of Nebraska and one in library science from the University of Illinois. Mac served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II with the 26th Air Depot Group in the Middle East and China-Burma-India. Following receipt of his Master of Library Science degree from Illinois in 1950, he was a science cataloger at Penn State University and head of the physics, astronomy and math library at Ohio State University from 1952-57. He then became associate head librarian and staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1957-1973. After retiring from LANL, he became an associate professor in the library at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, where he headed the science collection before becoming head of the undergraduate library. Upon retirement, he and his wife Gerry returned to Los Alamos and then moved to Santa Fe following the 2000 Cerro Grande Fire in Los Alamos. He is survived by his wife Gerry and three children - George (Valerie) Machovec and Chuck (Risa) Machovec of Denver, Colorado, and Diane Froude of Phoenix, Arizona - in addition to nine grandchildren.
