Alfred L. Gunderson - SAVANNAH - Alfred L. Gunderson, age 81, died on October 10, 2012 at his cottage surrounded by his wife and daughter. He was born May 21, 1931 in Chicago, IL. He lived most of his life in Elgin, IL before retiring to Ft. Myers, FL. He moved to Savannah to be closer to one of his daughters when he got sick. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1949. He served in the US Navy in the Air Department on board the USS Bennington, an aircraft carrier, during the Korean War. He was awarded the US Navy Commendation Ribbon for courageous conduct after a series of violent explosions on the vessel. He received his Bachelor's degree in Civil & Structural Engineering from Chicago Technical College in 1959. He was ranked fifth in his class. The majority of his career was spent with Baxtor & Woodman civil engineering firm in Crystal Lake, Illinois while he continued to live in Elgin, Illinois. He was a member of numerous clubs and organizations throughout his life, in addition to, a commitment to volunteer work with his church. Once he retired, he enjoyed taking communion to the sick with his wife at a nearby hospital. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Gunderson, of Savannah, GA; his daughter Laurie Williams, of Elgin, IL; his daughter; Marcy LeFevre of Centerton, AR; his daughter, Trisha Dibkey, of Savannah, GA ; his son, Kurt Gunderson of Clearwater, FL and 7 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11am Saturday, June 22 at The Catholic Cemetery on Wheaton in Savannah.
