Carey Elmore Jones - JESUP - Carey Elmore Jones, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2013 with his family by his side at Altamaha Healthcare Center under the care of Hospice of South Georgia. Mr. Jones was born on February 22, 1922 in Burke County, GA to the late Allen M. and Bessie Mae Jones. He served in the United States Navy during World War II where he attained the rank of Pharmacist's Mate 1st Class and was awarded the South Pacific Battle Ribbon and Amphibious Ribbon after service at numerous appointments in the United States and South Pacific. Mr. Jones attended the University of Florida where he graduated summa cum laude with Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Having served as Vice President of his class, Mr. Jones was very involved in student government at the University of Florida and was a member of the Rho Chi Society. In 1953, Mr. Jones moved to Jesup and began working at Knight - Vickers Drug Store. In 1966, he purchased the store from Mr. Knight and founded Jones Drug Company. Before his retirement in 1986, Mr. Jones had two additional drug stores, Jones Prescription Shop and Town and Country Pharmacy. His civic involvements were numerous. As a loyal Rotarian, he was past president of the Rotary Club of Jesup, a three time Paul Harris Fellow and was also instrumental in organizing the efforts to bring the polio vaccine to Wayne County. Mr. Jones was recipient of the Distinguished Service Award given by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and was the namesake of the Carey E. Jones Football Endowment at the University of Florida. As a member of First Baptist Church, Mr. Jones was a life deacon who taught Sunday School for several decades. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Myrtle B. Jones; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alan M. and Lynn M. Jones and Carey B. and Carmen H. Jones all of Jesup; one daughter, Dr. Michelle J. Barthlow and husband, Steven of Woodstock, GA; grandchildren, Kelly McLendon and husband, Joel, Kristan Peavy and husband, Rich, Ginny Jeffery and husband, Todd, Anna Jones, Carlie Jones, Wesley Phelps and Derrick Phelps and great grandchildren, Sophie, Alice, Davis and Reagan. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2013 at Jesup First Baptist Church with Reverends Michael VonMoss and James Sapp officiating. Interment will follow in the Jesup City Cemetery with military honors. Active pallbearers will be Rich Peavy, Joel McLendon, D.J. Jones, Brant Phelps, Derrick Phelps, Wesley Phelps and Todd Jeffery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rotary Club of Jesup and Golden Rulers Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 1625 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA 31545 or Jesup First Baptist Church, 185 South Brunswick Street, Jesup, GA 31546 Mr. Jones will be fondly remembered by those who knew and loved him as a true southern gentleman who was always a faithful husband, devoted father and grandfather, dedicated community servant and a die hard Florida Gator fan.
