James Downing Mathews, Sr. - BEAUFORT, SC - James Downing Mathews, Sr., passed away on October 29, 2012, at the Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort, SC, after a long illness. Jim was born and reared in Savannah, GA. His grade school was Marist Brothers and Cathedral Day School, and then Benedictine Military School. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia, School of Commerce in Accounting, Class of 1952, and became a member of the international professional fraternity Delta Sigma Pi. Following his apprenticeship program, he began his professional career with the Price Waterhouse Accounting firm in Atlanta. During the Korean Conflict, Jim served as Company Commander in the US Army infantry with the 101st Airborne where he earned an early promotion to First Lieutenant by Special Order of President Harry S. Truman on the criteria that Jim Mathews was outstanding among his peers. After returning to Savannah, Jim worked with the Dodge auto dealership and soon opened his own Jim Mathews Motors. He was elected president of the Georgia Independent Auto Dealers Association. During that time he worked hard to develop the first bonding law for auto dealers in the state of Georgia which led the way for the other states to follow. He later moved to Columbia, SC, where he started the Jim Mathews Insurance Agency. After a very successful insurance career, spanning many years, Jim semi-retired and moved to Beaufort, South Carolina, and began a very successful career working with clients throughout the Low Country. Jim is predeceased by his father, Frank C. Mathews, Sr., and mother, Alice Hennessy Mathews of Savannah. He is survived by his brother, Frank C. Mathews, Jr., of Savannah, his sister, Mary Mathews Starks of Harrisburg, PA, and his wife, Ellen T. Mathews, and his children, James D. Mathews, Jr., Elizabeth Mathews Stiles, Linda Mathews Wallis, Christine Elaine Mathews, Karen Mathews, Berryhill, John Kenneth Mathews. He dearly loved his family his grandchildren and the great-grandchildren and was beloved by them. He will be greatly missed by all. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC.
