Mr. Orion Ralph Kraft, Sr. - SAVANNAH - Mr. Orion Ralph Kraft, Sr., 85, died Thursday March 13, 2014, at St. Joseph's Hospital after a period of declining health. Born September 7, 1928 at Duffy and Jefferson Streets in Savannah, GA, he was a son of the late Jacob Christian Kraft, Sr. and Stella Ubele Kraft. He grew up in Savannah and was educated in the Chatham County school system which included Henry Street Elementary, Chatham Academy and Savannah High School where he played the clarinet in the band. He served in the United States Naval Reserves from 1948 - 1954 and was on active duty for two of those years during the Korean Conflict which included a six month round-the-world tour. Upon returning home he worked in Kraft's Bakery, the family business until it's closing in 1961. After that he was employed at Derst Baking Co. and then the Trading Post Furniture Company. He was the stockroom manager for Morrison's Cafeteria in the Oglethorpe Mall and was employed by the Cut Art Stone Company before his retirement in 1992. He belonged to the German Friendly Society where he was made a Life Member. He married the love of his life, Alice Faye Buck on December 27, 1963 at Epworth United Methodist Church. Together they raised two children in Savannah. Orion lived out his faith in God as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In his spare time he enjoyed doing projects with wood and especially baking for family and friends. He loved and cherished his family where he was known to say, Everyday is Christmas. Orion was currently a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Savannah, where he grew up. He had also been a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and one term as secretary of the Church Council. A special thanks goes to the staff and caregivers of Home Instead Senior Care for their excellent ministry in making him and his wife comfortable in their last months. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his wife of 50 years, Faye Kraft who passed away January 21, 2014, and his older brother, Mr. Jacob Christian Kraft, Jr. He is survived by his children, The Rev. Orion Ralph Kraft, Jr. (Mary) of Newton, NC, Deborah Faye Kraft Young (Richard) of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Steven and Bethany Young of Atlanta; a sister, Mrs. Carlyn Killian of Charlotte, NC, a brother, Mr. George Kraft of Tybee Island, GA, one niece, four nephews and several cousins. Visitation will be Thursday March 20, 2014 from 9:30AM - 10:30AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church at 10 West 31st St. in Savannah followed by the service at 11:00AM in the sanctuary co-officiated by The Rev. Peter Hartman of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Savannah and The Rev. Ralph Kraft of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Newton, NC. Burial with military honors will immediately follow the service at Greenwich Cemetery.
