The Rev. Dale R. Groff, 82, of York, and formerly of Auburn, passed away Friday at home.

Born in Lancaster, July 3, 1931, he was a son of the late Jay C. and Clara F. Kline Groff.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He received a bachelor's degree from Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, in l957, his bachelor of divinity degree from the Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1960 and was ordained by the Potomac Synod, Maryland, in June of that year. In 1974, he was awarded the Master of Divinity degree by the Lancaster Theological Seminary.

A United Church of Christ pastor of the Evangelical and Reformed tradition, he served first at Christ UCC, Cavetown, Md. (1960-1965). He then served for 23 years (1965-1988) at Rosedale UCC, Laureldale, Reading.

Having completed his active ministry at St. Paul's UCC, Mahanoy City, (1989-1996), he retired as Pastor Emeritus at age 65. At each of his full-time churches, Pastor Groff was personally active in the music and youth ministries.

Following retirement, he served as interim pastor for two years at St. John's UCC, Schuylkill Haven; three years at St. Peter's UCC, Pine Grove, First UCC, Schuylkill Haven, and St. Paul's UCC, Birdsboro.

He was also supply pastor at numerous churches in Schuylkill and Berks Counties through age 78. He served on numerous standing committees of the Catoctin, Reading and Schuylkill Associations and the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference UCC.

A deeply devoted family man, he emphasized the solidarity of family and loved family get-togethers. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, traveling and was an avid reader.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Elvin J. Groff.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Patricia Smith Groff, York; daughters, Eileen Wingard and husband, Scott, York, and Lois Yarnall and husband, Robert, East Stroudsburg; son, Derek, Reading; grandchildren, Lauren and Barrett Wingard, Brandon, Cody, Brett and Tyler Yarnall, and Jacob Groff; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at St. Paul's UCC, 1235 Summer Hill Road, Auburn, conducted by the Rev. Janet Lewis, pastor of St. John's UCC, Schuylkill Haven, and the Rev. Brad Walmer, pastor of St. Paul's UCC. The family will welcome visitors from 1 to 2 p.m. and to a meal following the service. Following cremation, interment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either St. Paul's UCC, Mahanoy City, P.O.
