James J. "Shorty" Bergen, 84, of Coal Castle, passed away peacefully Friday at York Terrace Golden Living Center.

Born in Heckscherville, Sept. 13, 1929, he was a son of the late John J. and Agnes Brennan Bergen.

He attended Penn State University.

He was an employee of the Schuylkill County Department of Parole from 1970 until his retirement as chief of adult probation on April 8, 1994.

He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Minersville, and the former St. Kieran Roman Catholic Church, Heckscherville.

Shorty was an avid competitive pigeon shooter, winning numerous titles in his younger years. At 18 years old, he was one of the youngest members of the once popular Schuylkill County Pigeon Shooters Organization.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jean Sidler Bergen, on Sept. 4, 2013.

He is survived by numerous cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Minersville, with the Rev. Adam C. Sedar officiating. Friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc., Minersville. Interment will be in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Hillside, Pottsville. Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc., Minersville, is entrusted with arrangements.
