John H. "Jack" Clifford, 74, of Cresswell Gardens, Ashland, died Wednesday at Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street.
Born in Pottsville, Nov. 22, 1938, he was a son of the late Clarence "Jack" and Mary Kane Clifford.
He was married to Catherine C. Callaghan Clifford for 48 years. They were married on June 13, 1964, at St. Kieran Church, Heckscherville.
He was of the Catholic faith.
He was a 1956 graduate of Saint Clair High School, received an associate degree in engineering from Penn State University in 1958, a bachelor's degree in biological science from Kutztown University in 1962, and a master's degree in biological science from Kutztown University in 1967, and took graduate courses at Penn State University, State College.
He was an adjunct professor in Science, Engineering and Technology at Penn State Schuylkill.
Jack was a teacher at Frackville High School from 1962 until the formation of North Schuylkill School District.
He was the head cross country coach at North Schuylkill High School and women's cross country coach at Penn State Schuylkill.
He was an avid outdoorsman, hiker, trail runner, road and mountain biker, who enjoyed long bike rides and Sunday mornings watching the sun come up at Tuscarora State Park, as well as hiking and bird watching.
He was preceded in death by a son, David J. Clifford, in 2006.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Catherine, are a son, John T. Clifford, husband of Elizabeth Clifford, Brodheadsville; a daughter-in-law, Caroline Burgess Clifford, State College; seven grandchildren, Kiera, Kodi, Jacob, Riley, Piper, Barbara and Bailey, all of Brodheadsville; a godson, Dennis Quinn, Minersville; cousins, nieces and nephews and the Callaghan family.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at James H. Evans Funeral Home Inc., Saint Clair. Interment will be private in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Saint Clair. Friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to Penn State Scholarship Fund, 200 University Drive, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972 or to the charity of donor's choice. James H. Evans Funeral Home Inc., Saint Clair, is in charge of arrangements.
