Joseph D. Koury Sr., 75, of Pottsville, passed away on Thursday evening surrounded by his family at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street.
Born in Pottsville, Aug. 15, 1938, he was a son of the late Victor J. and Josephine Jacobs Koury.
Joseph was a 1956 graduate of Pottsville High School and Penn State University.
He was the executive director of Greater Pottsville Sewer Authority for more than 30 years, retiring in 2007.
Joseph was very involved with civic organizations, which included the Pottsville Lions Club, where he served as president in 1980-81; Rotary Little League; and Knights of Columbus. He was a recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award from Pottsville High School.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa "Toot" Patinsky.
Joe is survived by his wife, Margaret A. "Peg" Devitt, to whom he was married for 50 years; three sons, Joseph D. Koury Jr., husband of Kim, Douglassville, Daniel J. Koury, husband of Sandy, Pine Grove, and Victor J. Koury, husband of Stacy, Hamburg; a daughter, Lorraine J. Koury, Pottsville; grandchildren, Natalie, Jordan, Daniel Jr., Emma and Gibson; a brother, Peter M. Koury; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would also like to recognize dear family friends, Mike Naydock and his late twin brother, Dave, who passed away in 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lord-Bixler Funeral Home Inc., 1818 Mahantongo St., Pottsville, with Deacon Jack Quirk officiating. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Pottsville.
