Michael DeMarco, 89, of Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, most recently of Fleetwood, passed away Saturday in Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading.

His wife, Hildegard I. Schmitt DeMarco, died Aug. 22, 2009.

Born in Minersville, he was a son of the late Frank and Caroline Borrel DeMarco.

Michael was a 1942 graduate of Minersville High School.

He was a Coast Guard veteran, serving in the North Atlantic during World War II.

He was a Reading police detective for more than 20 years, retiring in 1976. From 1976 to 1986, he worked as an investigator for Wells Fargo.

Michael was a member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Reading.

He was an avid sports fan and played football for the Pottsville Maroons, for which he was inducted into the PA Sports Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed golf.

He was a life member of Victor Emmanuel II Beneficial Society, where he was a counselor and sergeant-at-arms.

Michael was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved watching his grandchildren grow up and was looking forward to his reunion with his wife.

In addition to his wife, Michael was preceded in death by his 11 siblings, James DeMarco, Albert DeMarco, Edward DeMarco, Peter Rinaldo, John Rinaldo, Nicholas Rinaldo, Thomas Rinaldo, Stanley Rinaldo, Helen Tretter, Julia Terefencko and Margaret Daniels.

He is survived by his two children, Michael E., husband of Lisa DeMarco, Cumming, Ga., and Carla, wife of Kenneth Reimert, Fleetwood; his four grandchildren, Micheal, Sophia, Mason and Marlowe.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Gethsemane Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhome.com.
