William Baird Haverty, 88, of Wilmington, N.C., passed away Tuesday at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.
Born in Saint Clair, July 25, 1925, he was a son of the late William Robert and Marguerite Dormer Haverty.
He served his country in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a graduate of Penn State University.
William was a member of St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, Wilmington.
He was employed as a nuclear engineer with General Electric Co., retiring after 36 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Edna Banks Haverty; two daughters, Terri Haverty Nichols and her husband, Carl, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Traci Haverty Fleming, South Pasadena, Calif.; three grandchildren, Carl "Trey" P. Nichols III, William Mason Fleming and Piper Jane Fleming; nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark Catholic Church with a prayer service at 11 a.m. Right of committal will follow in the church columbarium.
