John J. McGlone, 93, Schuylkill Haven, died peacefully Wednesday night at the home of his son, with his family by his side.

Born in Pottsville, Feb. 21, 1921, he was a son of the late John and Mary Molly Faller McGlone, Deibert's Valley.

He was educated in a one-room school in Deibert's Valley and Schuylkill Haven High School.

He served with distinction in the Army during World War II. He made several Atlantic crossings serving aboard the U.S. Army Hospital Ship Wisteria. Upon separation from active duty, he served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, located in Pottsville.

Prior to his military service, he worked in the Baltimore plant of Glenn L. Martin Aircraft. He supported the World War II effort by assisting in the assembling of B-26 Marauders used in the air war in the South Pacific and the Philippines.

He retired from Western Electric Reading plant in 1986. He was a member of the Reading Works Pensioners Association. He completed several technical courses and was a gifted sheet metal worker.

John was a life member of VFW Post 3432 Schuylkill Haven/Pine Grove.

He was a member of St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Schuylkill Haven.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy McCord McGlone, to whom he was married for 59 years; and daughter-in-law, Vera Frohling McGlone. John was the last surviving sibling of his family of two brothers, Walter and Terrence; and four sisters, Alberta Borden, Ruth McGlone, Dorothy Crossley and Irene Noecker, all of the Schuylkill Haven area.

He is survived by a son, Col. Dennis J. McGlone, U.S. Army, retired, Wayne Township; grandchildren, Diana McGlone, Daniel and Dana McGlone, Harrisburg area, Amber McGlone and her boyfriend, Andy Lescosky, and Taylor McGlone, Orwigsburg; nieces and nephews.

John was a member of our greatest generation. Opa will be deeply missed.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Grabowski Funeral Home, Schuylkill Haven. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the services. Interment with military honors will be on the grounds of Schuylkill Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in John's honor be forwarded to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka KS 66675 or to St. Ambrose Church, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972.
