Janet Kowalczewski Whitner Obituary
Janet Kowalczewski Whitner

October 24, 1949-December 7, 2013

Janet Kowalczewski Whitner died peacefully at home on December 7 after a two-and-one half year battle with ovarian cancer. After earning degrees in medieval history from the Western Washington University and the University of Washington, Jan applied her talents and energy toward gardening, writing, and travel. She wrote more than 100 articles and 4 books on gardening topics, one of which was adapted as a special feature for KCTS television, and she lectured widely. Jan served as the chair of the horticulture committee of the Seattle Chinese Garden Society and led garden tours in China for the Society. For the last 6 years Jan held her dream job, serving as the editor of the Washington Park Arboretum's quarterly "Bulletin," and she volunteered in the Arboretum's Stewards program.

Her family and friends will miss Jan's quiet intellect, passionate dedication, deep compassion, and abiding appreciation for the knowledge and accomplishments of others. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Lifeline. A private celebration of life is planned for December 14th.
