Jerome Fife Sheldon

Jerome Fife Sheldon, 94, died Friday, October 18, 2013. He was born in Shanghai on April 25, 1919, the son of Sidney R. Sheldon and Eunice Fife Sheldon. Survivors are his son Stephen F. Sheldon of Seattle, his daughter Mary Torgan of Los Angeles, and three grandchildren, Michael Torgan, Alexander Sheldon, and Benjamin Sheldon, and his sister Janice Baumback of Iowa City.

The Sheldon family moved to Seattle in 1927. Jerome attended Ravenna Grade School and Roosevelt High School. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1940. During World War II he served in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was stationed in the Yukon Territory and the Aleutian Islands. He married Kathryn Hasemeier June 18, 1945. Their first home was in Alexandria VA. After that they lived in Roseburg OR, Modesto CA, Fairbanks AK, Anchorage AK, Ketchikan AK, Toledo OH, San Francisco CA, and Palo Alto CA. Jerome worked for the Roseburg News-Review, the Modesto Bee, the Fairbanks New-Miner, Jessen's Weekly, the Alaska Railroad, the Ketchikan News, the Toledo Blade, and the Palo Alto Times. In 1974 Jerome and Jane became the owners of the Palmer Frontiersman in Palmer AK. In 1979 they moved to Heppner OR, where they ran the Heppner Gazette-Times for a year. They moved to Seattle in 1983, where they established their home on Capitol Hill.

Jerome was predeceased by his wife Kathryn in 2002. He lived in the Park Shore retirement community from 2004. For the past 4 years he was in the skilled nursing facility at Park Shore, where he was well taken care of by the staff.
