John Ferguson Obituary
John Ferguson

1941 ~ 2013

John was born in Stockton, CA where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Lynn Stocking Ferguson. Both he and Lynn graduated from Stanford University where he rowed varsity crew and majored in civil engineering, going on to receive a Ph.D. from Stanford. Professionally, he was dedicated to his work as a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington, especially his research and collaboration with colleagues and students on projects to make water clean for people and the environment. His career spanned the 40 years of the Clean Water Act. We will always remember his love of his family, his work ethic, honesty, and generosity of spirit with his children and grandchildren. There was nothing more important to him than being surrounded by family; watching children and grandchildren's sporting events; or hosting family dinners. Though his time with us was too short and his death sudden, the time he had was lived well and enjoyed with the people he loved the most and who love him dearly. John is survived by his wife Lynn; his children and their spouses: Kent and Reina of Seattle, Mary and Tim of Boston, and Sally and Bart of Chicago; 7 adoring grandchildren: Nick, Nathan, Seth, Sage, Kayla, Celia, and Kira; his brother Jim Ferguson of Stockton; as well as many friends, students, and colleagues. A memorial service will be held on April 20th from 2-4 at the faculty club of the University of Washington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Water 1st International (www.water1st.org), the University District Food Bank (www.udistrictfoodbank.org), or a .
