Lyle Elwood Ostlund Obituary
Lyle Elwood Ostlund

Lyle Ostlund passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on June 17, 2014 in Bothell, WA. He was born on June 5, 1922 in Everett to Jennie Theresa Fahlstrom and Edward William Ostlund. Having graduated from Everett High School, he went on to attend the University of Washington from 1940-42, then to serve his Country in the US Army during WWII. On November 21, 1945, Lyle married Patricia Ann Carpenter, with whom he would spend the next 68 1/2 years! He completed his education and received his BS and DMD degrees from the U of Oregon Dental School in 1947, and again served his Country during the Korean War as a dental officer in the US Air Force. For 50 years, Lyle had both a dental practice in Everett and was a professor of dentistry at the UW; upon his retirement, he was honored to be appointed as Associate Professor Emeritus. He led and mentored fellow dentists in numerous dental study clubs throughout his professional life. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, The American Dental Assn, WA State Dental Assn, Snohomish Co Dental Society, American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, Academy of Operative Dentistry--and as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. Lyle was a member of the Everett United Methodist Church, various music associations, both Everett HS and UW swim teams, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, the Masons and the Elks Club. A passionate bicyclist, he rode across the USA and in 49 states, never managing to get to Alaska, but logging more than 50,000 miles. He loved photography, always carrying his camera with him. Spending time with family at their Lake Goodwin cabin which his dad and uncles built in 1937, was of particular joy, as was any time spent with his clan. Having a voracious zeal for knowledge, he forever yearned to learn more about everything he read, heard or saw and always kept a dictionary close by. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Shirley Keith (Phil) and Lucille Deveney (Dave). He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and his children: Terri Brooks (Art), Kathee Ostlund McGlothin (Robert), Ed Ostlund (Robin) and Cynthia Gillespie (Doug); his sister Dolores Earley (Hugh); 8 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A celebration of Lyle's life will be held on August 23 between 2-5:00 at the Everett Elks Club: 2802 Hoyt Ave, Everett, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lyle's memory to: UW Foundation, School of Dentistry, Box 359505, Seattle, WA 98195; Friends of the Everett Public Library, PO Box 5654, Everett, WA 98206; Evergreen Hospice Foundation, 12040 NE 128th St, MS 109, Kirkland, WA 98034--or a .
