A memorial service for Mary Y. Rakow, 85, of Bellevue, Washington will be Saturday, January 26th, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Bellevue, Washington. Mary died Tuesday, January 15, 2013.
Mary Yvonne Rasmussen Rakow was born to Sydney Peter Rasmussen and Clara (Halverson) Rasmussen on June 6, 1927, in Dixon, Nebraska, the oldest of 11 children. She married Gale Eugene Rakow in 1946 and was a country schoolteacher in Nebraska before moving to Globe, Arizona in 1956. Mary worked at the Globe JC Penney's for 30 years, starting in layaway in the basement and soon ending up in the business office, where she did the merchandising, handled HR, ushered in computers, and mentored, nurtured, and mothered many employees over the years. She retired in 1992, moving to Bellevue, Washington for the biggest and best job of her life, as grandmother to her beloved grandson Matthew. She kept her beautiful smile, her sense of humor, and her dignity to the very end.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Thomas, James, Russell and Elaine (Rasmussen) Dorrough. She is survived by her children, Terry Rakow and wife Linda of Phoenix, Arizona and Susan Anderson and husband Mark of Bellevue, Washington; grandchildren Noel Jury Spencer of Phoenix, Arizona and Matthew Eric Anderson of Stanford, California; great-grandchild Bowie Spencer; and siblings Robert and Irma Rasmussen, Glynn Rasmussen, William Rasmussen, William and Delores Johnson, Richard and Deanna Miller, and Dennis and Jacqueline Rasmussen.
