Dick was born in Seattle. He spent his school years in Olympia where he bought his first boat. He attended the University of Washington, pledged Alpha Delta Phi, joined ROTC and graduated in mechanical engineering. He served in Europe with the Signal Corps where he supervised building communication lines. When the war ended, he returned to Seattle to work for the telephone company and married his college sweetheart Phoebe Thankful Quigley. Together they raised a family, spent over 50 years in their Laurelhurst home, and cruised all the waters from Olympia to Alaska in their boats. Dick was also a successful sailboat racer. Phoebe died in 2009 leaving him without his best crew. Dick is survived and will be sorely missed by his children Margaret Gilbert, Scott Gilbert (Nancy), Phoebe Ann Russell (Dave), and Enid Gilbert, grandchildren Sean Russell and Logan Gilbert, and his extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held on May 18, 2013 at 10 a.m. at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, 4900 NE 50th St, Seattle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the .
