Obituary | Condolences

Valerie Maxine Bailey

"Our Pal Val", beloved aunt, sister, cousin and friend died in Kirkland at age 85 on November 25, 2012.

Valerie was born in Yakima, Washington on May 24, 1927 to Alice (Cooper) Bailey and Harrison W. Bailey. She spent her early years in Seattle, Washington, graduating from Roosevelt High School and later the University of Washington with a degree in English. Valerie was employed with the civil service in 1951 in Vienna, Austria, which would become her favorite place on earth to visit. She also worked at General Insurance (later Safeco) in Seattle and during that time was asked to head up the information booth staff at the Seattle World's Fair in 1962. She later moved to Glendale, California where she worked as a human resources manager for Jet Propulsion Labs and Caltech. She spent many a summer's weekend on Laguna Beach. Valerie returned to the Seattle area in 1994 to live closer to her family, brothers Harrison and Sherman, their wives Grace and Virginia, and her 6 nieces and nephews. Harrison and Virginia both predeceased her.

Valerie had a special knack for making all those around her feel comfortable; she could relate to people of all ages. She was a cheerful, generous and fun-loving person who enjoyed traveling, classical music, baseball and spending time with family. She liked to say "it's the little things in life." A favorite family memory will always be her 85th birthday celebration atop her beloved Seattle Space Needle.

No services were held but the family had a small gathering to remember and honor her on December 8th. Remembrances may be made to the Union Gospel Mission or the Gene and Irene Wockner Hospice Center. Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at the hospice center for your loving care of Valerie and her family.
