1971 - 2013
Gregory Michael Jones, 41, of Whittier, California, passed away on March 27, 2013, after a hard fought battle with multiple medical complications following a heart transplant performed on December 30, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the City of Los Angeles, California.
At the time of his death, Gregory was still actively serving as the President and C.E.O. of GreenCycle, one of Southern California's largest greenwaste/woodwaste processing facilities that he founded in June, 2002.
Gregory was born on October 14, 1971, into the family of Robert and Betty (Leberman) Jones of Kohler, Wisconsin. His older sisters, Lisa and Sheila fondly recall their young brother's fascination with anything mechanical on wheels, from tricycles to bicycles, from golf carts to pickup trucks that would later manifest into huge excavators, front-end loaders, diesel trucks, trailers and woodgrinders.
Gregory was a proud graduate of Kohler High School, class of 1990, and would often reflect with family about the dedicated teachers and staff.
Gregory was equally reminiscent and very grateful for the summers he worked for Hoffman Bros. General Contractors, Mike Koenig Construction Company and Enterprise Rent-a-Car where he was coached and mentored to always strive for the mark of excellence in whatever trade or profession pursued, a solid mid-western work ethic that would later serve him well during his many years as the chief executive officer of GreenCycle.
A dual love that preoccupied Gregory during the Kohler years was a great appreciation for the courageous and dedicated men and women of law enforcement in Sheboygan County. This affinity led to many hours of ride-a-longs with officers from the Wisconsin Highway Patrol, Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department, and the Kohler Police Department and ultimately inspired Gregory to enroll at Lakeshore Technical College between 1992-1994 where he successfully pursued an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and subsequently achieved Police Officer Certification.
Gregory's California dream began to unfold in the summer of 1990 following graduation from Kohler High School when he joined his uncle Lance as the second shift supervisor for United Pacific Corporation in Santa Fe Springs, California.
From 1998 to 2002, Gregory assumed the duties of Vice President/Green Waste Transfer & Recycling Operations for USA Biomass Corporation, a publicly traded firm based in Bell Gardens, California employing over 500 personnel providing solid waste transport and green waste recycling services to transfer stations operated by Waste Management of North America.
Building on years of experience in the recycling industry, Gregory next focused his full energies on the founding and creation of GreenCycle in June, 2002, which he envisioned as the California flag ship of wood waste recycling technology.
Gregory M. Jones is survived by his parents, Robert and Betty Jones of Kohler; sister, Lisa (Michael) Bershaw and their daughter, Claire of San Diego, California; and sister, Sheila (Michael) Williams and their daughter, Georgia of Irvine, California. Gregory is additionally survived by his uncle, Lance B. Jones of Rancho, Mirage, CA; uncle and aunt, Richard and Naudine Guske of Sheboygan; cousins, Peter Guske of Sheboygan, and Kristin Renzelmann of Kohler. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert and Lucille Jones, maternal grandparents, Buol and Ruby Leberman, and cousin, Mark Guske.
Friends, relatives and business associates are gathering at Gregory's peaceful hilltop home in Whittier on April 6, for a Memorial and Celebration of life. His larger than life presence will be deeply missed and mourned by family, friends and colleagues alike and his devotion to excellence in whatever endeavor he chose will be often cited as a benchmark of true success.
The Jones Family wishes to extend an invitation to all family and friends to attend a second Wisconsin Memorial and Celebration of Life in honor of Gregory to be held at Grace United Church of Christ in Kohler, Wisconsin, in May, with a date and time to be announced later, with Rev. Thomas M. Schroeder officiating. In lieu of flowers, the Family respectfully requests family and friends to consider a donation to the
in Gregory's honor.
