Gorter, Lawrence "Larry"

Lawrence "Larry" Gorter, age 83, of Sheboygan, found peace and went home to his Lord on Wednesday morning, August 27, 2014 after struggling with Alzheimer's. He was born March 5, 1931 in Sheboygan to Wietze and Jenny (Van Der Veer) Gorter. He attended Sheboygan Christian Grade School and was a graduate of Sheboygan North High School, Class of 1949. He then graduated from Coyne Electrical College in Ilinois, after which he served his country in the US Navy.

On January 16, 1954 Larry and Shirley Menzer were united in marriage at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. They relocated to Milwaukee where for seventeen years Larry was employed by General Motors during the space program. He later moved to Teledyne Wisconsin Motor where he was employed as a supervisor in purchasing until his retirement. After retirement Larry took up the game of golf which he thoroughly enjoyed. Over the years his hobbies included camping, fishing, boating, gardening, and bowling. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by his children, Laura (Bill) Daher of Mora, MN and Linda (Mark) Norman of Tega Cay, SC; grandchildren, Nicole (Kevin) Newville of New Richmond, WI, Billy ( Shawna Albert) Daher of Bloomington, MN, Mark (Tabby) Norman II of Winston-Salem, NC, and Krystle Norman of Charlotte, NC; great-grandson, Jake Norman and soon to be born great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Norman of Winston-Salem, NC; his sister, Wilma Gorter of Sheboygan, two sisters-in-law, Joyce Gorter of Sheboygan and Carol Gorter of Menomonee Falls, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William and John and a sister, Anita.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels and Crematory. Deacon Michael Burch will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Larry's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Countryside Manor West, especially Cassie, Melissa, Melanie Campbell, and Holly for their loving care. They would also like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Azura Memory Care for their loving care his last few months.
