Shreveport, LA - Abe E. Cowan, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Grace Home Hospice in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Shreveport on Friday, May 24 from 1 to 3 o'clock. A Mass of the Resurrection, officiated by Fr. Karl Daigle, will begin at 3 o'clock. Friends are also invited to gather with the family immediately after the Mass in the St. Joseph Church Family Life
Mr. Cowan was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica. He served with the Allied Forces during World War II with the British Army. After the war, he moved to the United States and graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Radio and Television. He produced television programs for many years in Cincinnati before moving to Shreveport in 1966.
Abe was a long-time resident of Shreveport. After leaving the television business, he owned a chain of dry cleaning businesses in Shreveport, Bossier, and Monroe. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served on the board of directors for the St. Joseph Credit Union for many years. He strongly supported the Parkinson's Disease Resource Network, acting as a Louisiana Congressional Coordinator in Washington, D.C., and co-chairing the annual local 5K race to support Parkinson's research.
He loved spending time with his family and friends boating and skiing at Lake Bistineau, traveling the world with his wife and taking beautiful photographs. In recent years, Abe was a regular guest editorial contributor for the Shreveport Times.
Above all else, Abe was devoted to his family, especially his wife, Catherine M. Cowan. He also deeply loved his children: Christy Cowan Fontenot and her husband Brent of Broussard, Julia Cowan Spear and her husband Jefferson of Slidell, Brian Cowan of Shreveport, Jim Cowan and his wife Lisa of Slidell, and Cathy Cowan of Lafayette.
Abe was known as "Big Daddy" to his beloved grandchildren Andrew Fontenot, Claire Fontenot, Christopher Spear and wife Kate, Phillip Spear, Emma Cowan, Charlotte Cowan, Jay Schexnider and fiancée Jasmine Rojas, and Maddison Peters; and great-grandchildren Jayden Schexnider and Brynden Gillis.
Abe is survived by his two sisters Alzier Cowan Wilham and Grace Cowan Pierce, Grace's husband Don, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alan Cowan and the former Gladys Benjamin and his two sisters, Alma Cowan Young and Gloria Cowan Pattison.
Abe's family thanks his physicians, the healthcare teams at Live Oak Health Center and Grace Home Hospice, and his caregiver Ms. Irma Maize, for the loving care he received.
In addition to the funeral services in Shreveport, interment will be on Thursday, June 6 at half past 4 o'clock at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Broussard, Louisiana. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family immediately following the burial until 7 o'clock in the Sacred Heart Church Parish Life Center.
