Aubrey was born July 9, 1929, in Shreveport, LA. He passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at his home following a lengthy illness, steadfastly and faithfully surrounded by his loving and devoted children.
Mr. Brooks married the love of his life, Peggy McGuire Brooks, to whom he was married for 60 years. Aubrey's business pursuits began as a clerk for his family's locally owned store, L. C. Brooks Grocery where he "bagged many a grocery." As a young boy, Aubrey enjoyed bird hunting and walking "many a field." His experience in marksmanship would serve him well as a U.S. Marine Corp, Rifle Instructor, during the Korean War. He held the "high score" shooting record which was unmatched and posted at Camp Lejune for three years.
Mr. Brooks owned and operated Tommie's Novelty for fifty years. He enjoyed owning and racing horses as well as any form of gambling. Mr. Brooks was described by all who knew him as "One of a Kind." Although Aubrey was a man with a "bold" personality, he "quietly" changed the face of Shreveport through property management, business development, and the hiring and training of hundreds of technical employees as well as by investing in "the little guy" over and over again.
Aubrey was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Peggy Ruth McGuire Brooks; and his brother-in-law, Bill McGuire. He is survived by his children, Terri Brooks Sour and husband, Johnny, Debbie Brooks and lifetime partner, Debbie Alexander and Tommie Brooks and wife, Julia; grandchildren, Michael Sour, Matthew Sour and wife, Kay, Taylor Anne Brooks, Paige Brooks and Peyton Brooks; and one great-grandchild, Luke Sour. He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Barton and her husband, Don, of Arkansas; and sister-in-law, Lottie McGuire, of Shreveport.
Pallbearers will be Art McGuire, Don Barton, Kenny Sawyer, Kyle Sawyer, David Oliver and Vince Lanoue. Honorary pallbearer will be his long-time friend, David Watkins.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Sally Ball, Dr. Dan Moller and Southern Care Hospice. Also, a very special thanks to Becky Mitchell and Barbara Gillins.
