SHREVEPORT, LA - Doretha Moss Barnes was born November 29, 1925 in Winnfield, Louisiana, one of ten children, six girls, and four boys, from the wedlock of Frank and Lorenza Webster Moss.

Her early education was received in Winn Parish. She graduated from Winn Training School as the valedictorian of her class. She earned her college degree from Southern University, Baton Rouge, and advance degrees from Louisiana State University


Doretha married Leonard C. Barnes on August 29, 1947, and to this union one daughter, Lenetta B. Brandon was born. She united with the Antioch Baptist Church in the late 1940's, and was an active member until her health failed.

As an educator, she taught Physical Education at Booker T. Washington High School, Shreveport, Louisiana, and was a very successful girl's basketball coach, and sponsored the Lionettes.

Her social and professional organizations included: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; The Links, Inc.; YWCA Board of Directors; Women's Commission; 1000 Women, and Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Diabetes Association Board of Directors.

Mrs. Barnes passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Grace Home in Alexandria, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard C. Barnes, daughter Lenetta B. Brandon, parents Frank and Lorenza Moss, brothers Willie L. Moss, Roy B. Moss, and Glen Moss, sisters Frankie M. Moran, Marjorie M. Williams, Louise Moss, and Dolores M. Thompson.

Survivors include one brother Donald T. Moss, one sister Lola M. Webb, sister-in-law Mildred Gray Moss, special friends Althia Fuller, Travis and Johnetta Griffin, godchildren Kevin and Terri Boatner, numerous relatives and friends.

Homegoing Celebration will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 28, 2013 at Antioch Baptist Church, 1057 Texas Ave., Shreveport, LA. Interment - Lincoln Memorial Park.

An Evening of Remembrance will be Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Winnfield Funeral Home.
