Joseph L. Ewing, Jr., M.D. passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2013 in Shreveport, LA.
Dr. Ewing was born on January 1, 1921, in Shreveport, LA. He graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1937. Although he had an appointment to West Point, he chose to attend LSU and received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the E. J. Ourso College of Business at LSU in 1941 and then entered the Paul M. Hebert Law Center. In 1942, he left law school to join the Air Force. He flew B-24's and B-29's throughout World War II. After his discharge, Dr. Ewing attended Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and graduated in 1950. He completed his residency in urology at Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport, LA. Dr. Ewing practiced medicine in Shreveport and also taught at Louisiana State University School of Medicine and the VA Hospital in Shreveport until he was 80 years old.
Dr. Ewing is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marion Lighthall Ewing; three daughters, Eileen Ewing of Fort Bragg, CA; Diane Lawrence and husband, Scott, of Shreveport; Dr. Barbara Miner and husband, Noel, of Billings, MT; son, Steve Ewing and wife, Karen, of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Ariel Ford, Miranda Valdez, Jennifer Caddell, Todd Lawrence, Betsy Heffernan, Kris, Kimberley, and Dillon Miner, Rebecca Krautner and Courtney Ewing. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren, his cousin Twain K. Giddens, and a nephew, Pete Tucker, of Austin, TX.
