SSG Richard Vazquez

Crestview, FL - Funeral services honoring the life of SSG Richard Vazquez will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, November 25, 2013 at Southside Baptist Church in Mansfield, LA with Reverend David Permenter officiating. Burial will follow in the Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield, LA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, November 24, 2013 from 1:00 until 5:00 PM.

SSG Richard L. Vazquez, 28, was born November 3, 1985 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He later moved to Seguin, Texas where he graduated from Seguin High School and enlisted in the United States Army in August 2004. SSG Vazquez first enlisted in the Army Reserves as a Supply Specialist and attended Basic Combat Training at Ft. Jackson, SC and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Ft. Lee, VA. After completing AIT, SSG Vazquez was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. During his first drill, requested to go Active Duty resulting in him reclassing as an 11B, Infantryman, with AIT at Ft. Benning, GA. His first assignment on Active Duty was 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Ft. Campbell, KY where he was assigned to the Scout Platoon as a Scout Observer for five years. During this time, SSG Vazquez deployed twice in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. His first deployment was from 2005 to 2006 where he served as the squad's Radio Telephone Operator and Junior Scout Observer. He deployed again from 2007 to 2008 for 15 months where he served as a Team Leader. In 2009, SSG Vazquez volunteered to become a Special Forces Soldier. SSG Vazquez graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2010 as an 18B, Special Forces Weapons Sergeant. He was then assigned to Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Operational Detachment-Alpha 7322. SSG Richard L. Vazquez died as a result of injuries sustained while conducting combat operations in Kandahar, Afghanistan on 13 November 2013. He is survived by his parents, Teresa L. Paddie (mother), Teodoro Vazquez Lopez (father), Bryan Melton (step-father), (brothers) Romario Vazquez, Brandon K. Melton, and Pablo Vazquez, (sisters) Christine Marie Vazquez, Celza L. Sauceda, Ashley J. Hyde, Isabel C. Vazquez, and Endina S. Vazquez.
