William Bickham Fowler

Shreveport, LA - William Bickham Fowler died peacefully at Live Oak on Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Dr. Fowler, a native and life-long resident of Shreveport, was predeceased by his parents, Sanders and Mary Colquitt Fowler; his brothers, Sanders, Jr. and Walter Lake; his sisters-in law Alice Fowler and Dell Fowler; and his brothers-in law, George Marion Hearne III and Robert James Destiche. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Fowler Hearne and Harriet Fowler Destiche; his nephews, Sanders Fowler III, George Marion Hearne IV, Sanders Fowler Hearne, William Lake Hearne, James Ross Destiche, and James Hutchinson Hearne; his nieces, Hallie Fowler Hart and Mary Destiche; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews; as well as numerous friends.

Dr. Fowler was educated at C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, and then served in the United States Navy during World War II. Following the war, he was graduated from Centenary College and received his degree in dentistry from Loyola Dental School in New Orleans. He practiced dentistry in Shreveport until his retirement. He attended St Paul's Episcopal Church where he served as an usher.

Dr. Fowler was a member of the Rotary Club of Shreveport since 1986 and was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed sailing on Cross Lake. Dr. Fowler was also an artist and musician.

A memorial service will be held at St Paul's Episcopal Church on Thursday, May 22 at 11 a.m. with Father Paul Martin officiating. Pallbearers will be the nieces and nephews of Dr. Fowler. Honorary Pallbearers will be Coleman Brown, Morris Burns, Jim Gibson, Walter Hawkins, Jr., Edwin Jones, Sam Loeb, Bob Mayo, Bob Rosenzweig, Henry Taylor, and Jimmy Weyman. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to charities of the donor's choice.

Dr. Fowler's family would like to thank Dr. Alan Borne, Dr. William Haynie Jr., the staff of the North Pavilion at The Oaks, and Lucy Groves of Willis-Knighton hospice for their caring ministrations over the past months.
