Arthur Andrew James Oct. 2, 1921 - May 13, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Mr. James was a graduate of Mishawaka High School with further education at Indiana University and GE in West Lynn, Massachusetts. He started his career in engineering at the Studebaker Aviation Plant in South Bend, IN, but then was inducted into service in WW II into the 11th Armored Division Headquarters and was sent to England where he joined General Patton's 3rd Army. His assignment was reconnaissance of enemy territory whereupon he brought back maps of enemy line locations, ammunition, gasoline, bridge and water sites for company commanders. He fought in France, Bastogne Belgium, Germany, and Austria meeting Russian Troops on the eastern side of the Danube. He was discharged with honors, including 2 sharp-shooting Bronze Stars on January 4, 1946. Shortly after that he was reemployed by Studebaker's in the Aviation Division. Two and a half years later he joined Body Engineering as lead designer. When Studebaker's closed he was hired by the Ford Motor Co. in the Body Division where he designed the 1964 Mustang interior, and the nose cone landing gear for the C5A aircraft. In 1965 he moved his family back to South Bend where he was employed by the Bendix Corporation in the Automotive Division as a brake designer. After retirement from Bendix he was employed by Notre Dame University as Stadium Personnel Director and retired there in 1997. Mr. James was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason with Council Oak Masonic Lodge #745, and served in the line of the Masonic Lodge, receiving a 50-year pin in 2007. In 2010 he flew on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to view the WW II Memorial where his name is registered in the WW II memorial book. On October 6, 1943, he married Elizabeth Elaine of South Bend. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of South Bend; daughter, Andrea James of South Bend; daughter, Bonnie Orszulak, and son-in-law, James Orszulak of Granger. A Masonic memorial funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014, in Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd., with Council Oak Masonic Lodge # 745 officiating. Military Honor service with entombment will follow at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park Cemetery, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Saturday.
